CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Using darkness mana to keep his feet from making any noise on the red stone floor, Thorn walked down the tunnel, entering deep into the tower. He wore his bow on his back and carried two large quivers at his waist next to the dagger he had made. Clutching his staff, he proceeded with caution, half-expecting a monster to pop out and ambush him. The red stone tower he was in was at least three quarters of a mile wide at the base, if not larger, and as he wound his way down into it, he began to hear the sound of water rushing through the walls.

Based on the markings along the edges of the tunnels, it appeared that this tunnel had been dug out by some creature, potentially even the tiger itself. After roughly a mile the winding passage branched out, with a short passage leading to a wide cavern that held a pool of water and a longer passage that dipped even further into the earth. The wide pool was formed by water trickling from the ceiling and there were countless small creatures and plants in it, forming an aquatic ecosystem that glittered like a fairyland.

Colored fish flitted this way and that between glowing plants that waved in the gently moving water. The whole pool thrummed with life force, causing Thorn’s throat to suddenly feel parched. Recognizing it was his lich totem acting up, Thorn closed his eyes and stepped back, working to center himself before he did something he would regret. When he felt like he was able to control himself, he turned to scan the rest of the room.

There was a raised platform on the far end of the cavern where the tiger must have slept. Piles of bones littered the ground around it and a thick layer of dried vegetation had been piled up on top to provide a cushion. Walking over, he poked through the mess but didn’t find anything interesting. Apart from the pool of water teeming with life, Thorn didn’t see anything else of note in the room, so he walked back out into the passage and headed deeper into the earth.

Red stone walls soon gave way to a dark-gray stone reminiscent of the ruins Thorn had seen on the fourth strata. The rounded tunnel slowly twisted into a square passage and the torn earth transformed into uniformly rectangular stones, making Thorn think he was entering another ruin. After his experiences in the last few ruins, Thorn was much more cautious and slowed down considerably.

The only sound was the faint rush of water that seemed omnipresent in the tower, but Thorn still proceeded carefully, thoroughly scanning everything inside the range of his mental sense. Noticing an increase in air moisture, Thorn figured he was getting close to the source of the water, and soon enough he saw a wide doorway that led out onto a platform. Taking a moment to triple-cast shields around himself, he gingerly stepped through the door and into a giant room shaped like the inside of a vase.
